Around fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.

Law enforcement then found many other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.

Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.

An important political figure stated the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
